Studio Hall occupies part of the old SouthPort Uniting Church building on Dorcas Street, a short stroll from South Melbourne Market and the Clarendon Street shops. The church hall and adjoining rooms have been converted into a series of light-filled studios, ranging from small single-person rooms of around 13 square metres up to larger group spaces of nearly 50 square metres, most with polished timber or concrete floors and generous windows. The project is run as an Albert Park College initiative, supported by St Kilda Southport Uniting Church, and it works a little differently to a typical studio-for-rent setup. Creatives who take on a space do so at a subsidised rate, in exchange for volunteering time back to the college's students, which might include running workshops, opening their studio for tours, or helping at reception. It's as much about connecting young people with working artists as it is about affordable studio space. Beyond the individual studios, there's a communal kitchen and dining area where tenants can cross paths, plus a large central hall with its own commercial kitchen and bathroom facilities, which seats up to 100 people and is available for community groups to hire for meetings, workshops or events. Heating, cooling, internet and outdoor garden space are included across the site. Studio Hall isn't really set up for casual public visits or retail browsing, it's a working space for its resident creatives, and studios are allocated by application, often with a waitlist.
