The beach has long served as a local gathering point for swimming, sunbathing and family outings, with the South Melbourne Life Saving Club watching over the shallows during patrol season. Families are well catered for at the Plum Garland Memorial Playground, set just back from the sand, while a run of beach volleyball courts draws players on weekend afternoons. A swimming-only, no-boating zone extends between Lagoon Pier and Kerferd Road, keeping the water clear for casual swimmers. Public toilets sit at each end of the beach, and a kiosk and café provide coffee and light refreshments without needing to leave the foreshore. The beach connects directly to the Bay Trail, a shared path used for walking, jogging and cycling that runs the length of Port Phillip's inner bayside foreshore. At the southern end, the beach meets the historic Kerferd Road Pier, a popular spot for fishing and photography. Dogs are permitted off-leash in designated sections nearby, making the area a regular stop for local dog walkers as well as beachgoers.
