Pizzateca Lupa

A Roman-style caffè and pizzeria inside South Melbourne Market serving pizza teglia, pizza tonda and fresh pasta from morning until night.

Pizzateca Lupa occupies a corner stall at South Melbourne Market, where brothers Lino and Gabriele Torre serve Roman teglia slices, thin round tonda pizzas and fresh pasta alongside Italian wine and coffee. The timber-and-maroon fit-out by Jackson Clements Burrows nods to a traditional streetside Italian eatery.

Pizzateca Lupa opened in 2024 on the corner of Cecil and Coventry streets, taking stall 53 within South Melbourne Market. It was founded by Italian-born brothers Lino Torre, previously of Park Street Pasta and Wine, and Gabriele Torre, former head pizza chef at DOC, working alongside Salvatore Malatesta of St Ali. The venture takes its name from the Roman she-wolf of the city's founding myth, and its menu leans into Rome's pizza traditions. Three formats appear on the menu: pizza teglia, cut by the slice from a high-hydration dough baked in trays; pizza tonda, a 13-inch thin-crust round pizza cooked to order; and a weekly pizza al padellino that takes 72 hours to prepare. Alongside the pizza, the kitchen turns out antipasti, fresh pasta and Italian street snacks, finishing with tiramisu. Drinks span Italian cola and chinotto through to wine, beer and aperitivo cocktails. Designed by Jackson Clements Burrows, the 34-seat space uses timber and maroon tones to evoke a Roman streetside caffè rather than a typical market stall. Trading across breakfast, lunch and dinner on most days, it functions as both a casual coffee stop and a sit-down pizzeria, with walk-ins welcome and takeaway available for visitors moving through the market.
