Luma Pictures is a visual effects studio that started in Venice, California in 2002, before opening a second office in Melbourne in 2013 and a third in Vancouver in 2021. The Melbourne studio sits in Southbank, just across the way from South Melbourne, and forms part of a company that now employs close to 300 people across its locations. The studio's work covers the kind of large-scale digital effects used in major feature films - creature work, environments, digital doubles and other visual effects that support a production's live-action footage. Over more than two decades, Luma has contributed to more than 100 feature films, including Elvis, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Black Panther, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End and Guardians of the Galaxy. The studio has also worked on Oscar-winning films such as Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Jojo Rabbit, No Country for Old Men and True Grit. Luma operates as a visual effects house working directly with film studios and production companies rather than the public, so there's no walk-in or ticketed experience on site. For local film industry professionals, though, it's a notable part of the creative precinct neighbouring South Melbourne, with new business, press and recruiting enquiries all handled through the studio's website.
