Lakeside Stadium occupies the site of the former Lakeside Oval, home to South Melbourne Football Club from 1880 to 1981 and the South Melbourne Cricket Club until 1994, at the northern end of Albert Park Lake. A 1995 redevelopment converted the ground into a rectangular soccer stadium, and a further rebuild completed in October 2011 added an eight-lane IAAF-standard synthetic athletics track with a ten-lane straight, a six-lane warm-up track, a FIFA-sized natural grass pitch, an electronic scoreboard and a new northern grandstand. The venue's heritage 1926 grandstand now houses the Victorian Institute of Sport. Managed by State Sport Centres on behalf of the Victorian Government, Lakeside Stadium is the regular home of South Melbourne FC in the National Premier Leagues Victoria, and hosts Athletics Victoria, Athletics Australia and Little Athletics events, with Olympic hurdler Sally Pearson among the athletes to have raced on its track. A statue of Olympic sprinter Peter Norman, unveiled in 2019, stands at the stadium. Beyond sport, the grandstands and function rooms are available for private and corporate hire, and casual athletics training sessions can be booked online. On-site parking includes more than 400 bays, with tram routes 12 and 96 stopping nearby, keeping the stadium accessible for spectators and visiting teams without a car.
