Kidko Performing Arts School is a family business rather than a franchise — it was founded and is still run by concert pianist Rebecca Chambers and her husband Greg McMaster, a jazz and musical theatre vocalist, and the pair have built a teaching studio around their own musical backgrounds. The main studio sits in Albert Park, fitted out with a Steinway grand, a Yamaha CX3 grand and a run of upright and digital pianos, but a good number of South Melbourne children come to know Kidko differently: through the private lessons the school runs during school hours at South Melbourne Park Primary, where students are collected from class for a rotating weekly lesson so they don't keep missing the same subject. Piano, voice, guitar, drums, violin and ukulele are all taught on-site there, alongside the fuller range of instruments — including cello and flute — available at the Albert Park studio itself. Teaching draws on Suzuki, Kodaly and Orff methods alongside more contemporary approaches, and families who want a formal benchmark can opt into AMEB or ANZCA exams. Twelve concerts are held every year on Sunday afternoons, giving students a low-pressure chance to perform in front of family, and the school also puts on concerts at a local South Melbourne nursing home. Rebecca Chambers, a former Young Australian of the Year and a pianist with more than two decades of teaching experience, designed Kidko's own beginner piano book series specifically for young students, which is used across the school's programs. Lessons run in 25 or 30-minute blocks scheduled for the full school term, with the option to continue at the same time each week. It's a solid choice for South Melbourne and Albert Park families after structured, exam-track music tuition rather than a casual drop-in class.
