Fine Selection & Alterations

A South Melbourne Market stall pairing handmade natural-fibre loungewear and towels with an on-site clothing alterations service.

Fine Selection & Alterations trades from South Melbourne Market, combining handmade and locally designed clothing and knitwear with a genuine alterations service. Owner Irem, a trained seamstress with The Social Studio, offers on-site mending, hemming and resizing alongside a ready-to-wear collection built around organic bamboo and linen.

Fine Selection & Alterations began as an online store in 2021 before finding a permanent home at South Melbourne Market, where it now combines two distinct offerings under one stall. On one side sits a collection of handmade, hand-knitted and locally designed clothing and accessories, built around natural fibres including organic bamboo and linen. On the other is a genuine alterations service, run by owner Irem, a trained seamstress who also works with The Social Studio, a non-profit fashion enterprise supporting local refugees and new migrants. The stall's loungewear range, The Cozy Wear, launched at the market itself and is made in Melbourne from fabric crafted in Turkey, with scrunchies and bags made from the offcuts to keep production close to zero-waste. The towel and robe collection follows the same philosophy, handmade in Turkey from organic bamboo using GOTS certified dyes. For market visitors, the combination is a practical one: browse a genuinely considered, sustainably made clothing range, then have a hem taken up or a button repaired without needing a separate trip elsewhere in South Melbourne.
