Factory Sound built its reputation on York Street in South Melbourne, where a rehearsal and recording space from the early 1990s grew into one of the country's best-known pro audio retailers. After more than 30 years on that site, the business has moved into a purpose-built showroom on Tarver Street in Port Melbourne, designed with more room for product demonstrations, trade consultations and events than the old warehouse allowed. The shelves and demo bays cover the full spread of professional sound and AV gear: microphones from Shure, Rode, Sennheiser, Neumann and DPA, mixing consoles from Allen & Heath, Midas and DiGiCo, speakers and amplifiers from d&b audiotechnik, QSC and RCF, plus DJ equipment, lighting, connectors and cabling for anyone rigging a stage or a studio. Staff lean toward musicians, touring techs, venue operators and AV installers who need someone who can talk through impedance matching or wireless frequency coordination rather than just ring up a sale, and the store still runs trade accounts alongside its retail counter. Weekday hours stretch into the evening and the doors open on Saturdays too, useful for anyone squeezing in a gear run around a gig schedule. A sister store operates in North Parramatta, Sydney, but the Port Melbourne showroom carries the history, having grown out of a business that's been part of Melbourne's live sound and recording scene for over three decades.
