Established in 1976, the Australian Tapestry Workshop is a working craft studio in a heritage building on Park Street, South Melbourne, where a small team of weavers hand-produce large-scale tapestries designed in collaboration with Australian and international artists. Over nearly fifty years the studio has completed more than 500 commissioned tapestries for public and private collections. Open to the public Thursday to Saturday, the ATW lets visitors watch the weaving process from an internal mezzanine that looks down over the loom floor, as well as into the dye lab where wool is coloured across a palette of 368 shades before it reaches the loom. Two galleries within the building host rotating exhibitions of tapestry, textiles and contemporary art, and there is a shop selling ATW-dyed yarn, cards, puzzles and books. Guided tours can be booked for a closer look at the weaving process, and the workshop also runs weaving classes and kids' sessions for anyone keen to try the craft themselves. It suits art lovers, textile enthusiasts, and anyone curious about traditional craft skills still practised by hand, as well as families visiting on a Saturday. The shop and ground-floor galleries are wheelchair accessible via a ramp, with an accessible bathroom and a dedicated accessible parking bay out front, though the mezzanine level is stairs-only. Street parking nearby is metered, and the South Melbourne Market a short walk away offers free parking for the first two hours on Wednesdays and Fridays. The ATW is closed on Victorian public holidays.
