Founded in 1996, the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) is a national institution dedicated to training young professional musicians from Australia and New Zealand through an intensive Performance Program and other pathways for developing classical musicians. For close to a quarter of a century, ANAM was based at the heritage-listed South Melbourne Town Hall on Bank Street, a grand 1880s civic building designed by architect Charles Webb. In 2020, ANAM relocated to Abbotsford Convent while the Town Hall undergoes a major restoration, a project co-funded by ANAM and the City of Port Phillip that will eventually deliver a reimagined 350-seat main auditorium alongside a new 150-seat performance venue, rehearsal studios and improved public facilities. The building is expected to be structurally complete by late 2027 and open to the public again in 2028. In the meantime, ANAM's concerts, masterclasses and recitals are held at venues including the Rosina Auditorium and Good Shepherd Chapel at Abbotsford Convent, and St Kilda Town Hall. Many of these events are open to the public, and City of Port Phillip residents can claim a free ANAMates membership for entry to ANAM recitals, soundbites, masterclasses and in-conversations. ANAM celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2026, marking three decades of training emerging classical musicians who go on to orchestras and ensembles across Australia and overseas.
