Albert Park Indoor Sports Centre operates from the Pit Building on Aughtie Drive, opposite the Albert Park Reserve ovals, and is known locally as The Pits. Run by Local Sports Group, the venue has hosted indoor futsal, netball, dodgeball and handball competitions for around 400 teams across Melbourne, alongside junior development programs and casual court hire for training and social games. The centre operated for roughly three decades before closing to the public as part of a broader redevelopment of the Albert Park Pit Building, which also serves as a Formula 1 pit facility during the Australian Grand Prix. Construction is underway to replace the existing five courts with a new facility offering seven full-size netball and futsal courts, seven-metre ceilings and competition-standard run-off space suitable for basketball, volleyball and badminton, plus an on-site cafe with indoor and outdoor seating. The rebuild is timed for completion before the 2028 Australian Grand Prix, after which social sport competitions are expected to resume. Until then, updates on the reopening and on arrangements for existing members are published through the operator's website and social media channels. The redevelopment forms part of wider upgrades to sporting facilities around Albert Park Reserve, funded jointly by state and federal governments, aimed at modernising the precinct for both community sport and international motorsport use.
