Albert Park Lawn Tennis Club sits at the western end of St Vincent Gardens, a landscaped square in the middle of a nineteenth-century residential precinct bordering Albert Park, Middle Park and South Melbourne. Founded in 1883 as the South Melbourne Lawn Tennis Club, it later took the Albert Park name and now ranks among Victoria's oldest continuously operating tennis clubs, with membership passing 330 in recent years. The club's twin courts have changed surface several times over 140 years, moving from early asphalt to en-tout-cas and now to Classic Clay, with lighting fitted for evening play between roughly 6.30am and 10pm. A modest clubhouse provides a kitchen, showers, toilets and an outdoor barbecue area for players and social events. Programs include professional coaching, junior and senior pennant competitions, and regular social tennis sessions that bring together players of varying ability. Membership remains the primary route to court access, though the club allows a limited number of casual visits by arrangement, generally capped at twice a month and requiring a member to sign the visitor in. The club's history is documented in Joy Bandy's book Playing in the Park, launched alongside a 140th anniversary celebration in March 2024 that included exhibition matches and historical displays for members and the surrounding community.
