Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC) opened on the northern edge of Albert Park Lake in July 1997 and was expanded for the 2006 Commonwealth Games, when an outdoor 50-metre pool and hydrotherapy pool were added. The centre is operated by the State Sport Centres Trust and functions as Victoria's principal venue for competitive swimming, hosting squads recognised by the Victorian Institute of Sport alongside members of the public. Facilities include two 50-metre pools, a 25-metre indoor lap pool, a leisure pool with a water slide, and a hydrotherapy pool used for rehabilitation. A separate stadium wing houses courts for basketball, netball, squash, badminton and table tennis, with retractable seating for around 2,000 spectators during events. MSAC also runs a gym and group fitness timetable, an Athlete Performance Centre, and the Lakeside Sports Medicine Centre, which offers physiotherapy, podiatry and other allied health services on-site. Visitors can eat at the Sir Albert Cafe or the reception cafe, and a retail shop sells swimwear and equipment. The venue is accessible via wheelchair-friendly entries, accessible changerooms with hoists and a Changing Places facility, and is served by tram routes 96 and 12 as well as on-site paid parking.
