Antipodes Theatre Company was founded in part by New York transplants who found themselves about as far from home as geographically possible, and the company takes its name from that sense of duality - antipodes meaning the direct opposite point on the globe. Under artistic director Brandon Pape, Antipodes has staged the Australian premiere of Ghost Quartet, an immersive reimagining of Guys and Dolls at Chapel Off Chapel, and productions including Sam I Am, And She Would Stand Like This, Passing Strange and Orlando, several of which have picked up Green Room Award nominations. The company also runs an annual Winter Lab, developing new work and bold ideas with local writers and artists. The company's headquarters, known as Antipodes HQ, occupies a 13.3 by 8.9 metre space with a sprung wood floor on Thistlethwaite Street in South Melbourne. Alongside housing rehearsals, workshops and Antipodes' own productions, the space is available for hire by other companies and individuals for rehearsals, classes, workshops and photography, complete with a kitchenette, four split-system heating and cooling units, and optional sound and lighting equipment. It's ground-level and easy to access, with commercial and not-for-profit hire rates available by the hour, day or week. Antipodes maintains a commitment to at least 50 per cent representation on stage and off by women, ethnically diverse artists, people with disability, trans and non-binary people, and other historically under-represented communities.
