The Base Recording Studios

A working recording studio on Yarra Place built around a vintage Amek G2520 console, run by ARIA-winning engineer Phil Threlfall since 2004.

The Base occupies 7 Yarra Place in South Melbourne, a recording studio with roots back to the 1990s when the space traded as Lifesaver Studios. Renovated and renamed in 2004, it's now owned and run by ARIA-winning engineer Phil Threlfall, who works out of Studio 1 alongside his Amek G2520 analogue console. The building also houses Affinity Music Group producers Styalz Fuego and Nic Martin, who've operated from Studios 2 and 3 since 2010.

The Base is a recording, mixing and production studio at 7 Yarra Place in South Melbourne. The building has a long history in Melbourne's music industry: it operated as Lifesaver Studios through the 1990s before being renovated and rebranded as The Base in 2004. Engineer Phil Threlfall took over as in-house engineer in 2007, bringing his Amek G2520 analogue console, outboard gear and microphone collection into Studio 1, and purchased the business outright in 2015. Threlfall's mixing and engineering credits include Gold and Platinum albums, ARIA Award wins and nominations, and a Grammy certificate for his work on the song 'What A Beautiful Name'. Since 2010 the facility has also been home to Affinity Music Group, with producers Styalz Fuego and Nic Martin working from Studios 2 and 3. The Base offers tracking, mixing, writing and production services, along with dry-hire access for freelance engineers and producers who want to bring their own clients into a fully equipped facility. Songwriter and arranger Jared Haschek contributes string, horn and piano arrangements for clients who need them. Beyond music, the studio handles voice-over recording for television, radio and corporate use, and provides sound work for film and video projects, including foley, ADR and mixing to picture, with a projector set up in the Studio 1 live room for syncing performances to on-screen action. As a working studio rather than a public venue, sessions run by appointment - the team welcomes enquiries from artists, producers and engineers wanting to record, mix or discuss a project.
