Gasworks Arts Park sits on Graham Street in Albert Park, on the site of the old South Melbourne Gas Plant, close enough to the South Melbourne border that it's a natural stop for anyone exploring the area. The four hectares of parkland retain some of the original gasworks structures and are dotted with public sculptures, while the buildings house two theatres, two galleries and around fifteen artist studios, all run by the City of Port Phillip as a working creative precinct rather than a museum piece. On any given week there's a fair spread going on: theatre seasons and comedy nights in the Main Theatre, changing exhibitions in the Foyer Gallery and Angela Robarts-Bird Gallery, open studio evenings where resident artists let you see work in progress, and a steady program of classes covering life drawing, painting, jewellery and yoga. A farmers' market sets up on site every third Saturday of the month, and the Gasworks Cafe is open for a coffee or bite before or after a show. There's also a kiln firing service for local ceramicists. The park itself is popular with families and dog owners, thanks to a playground and a well-used off-leash area, so it's as much a spot for a Sunday wander as it is a destination for a night at the theatre. All venues are wheelchair accessible, with an accessible bathroom near the Main Theatre, an assistive listening system for performances, and guide dogs welcome throughout. Free street parking is available around the park, and it's an easy tram ride from the city on the route 1 line. Between the theatre program, the galleries, the studios and the park itself, there's usually a reason to drop by more than once.
