Simply Spanish

An award-winning paella restaurant beside South Melbourne Market, family-run since 2007 and voted Best Paella Outside of Spain three times.

Simply Spanish has served paella and tapas from Cecil Street beside South Melbourne Market since 2007, run by a family team headed by chef Leno and his son Jake. The menu covers a range of paellas alongside tapas classics like garlic prawns and patatas bravas, backed by sangria and a Spanish-leaning wine list. The restaurant has picked up the Best Paella Outside of Spain award three times, in 2016, 2018 and 2024.

Simply Spanish has operated from South Melbourne Market since 2007, growing from a market stall into a family-run restaurant and catering business built around authentic Spanish paella. Head chef Leno, a guest judge on MasterChef Australia, runs the kitchen alongside his son Jake, and the pair have picked up the Best Paella Outside of Spain award three times, in 2016, 2018 and 2024. The core menu revolves around a rotating range of paellas, from seafood and mixed meat versions through to vegetarian options, cooked in large pans visible to diners. Tapas cover the more familiar Spanish repertoire, including garlic prawns, patatas bravas and empanadas, finished with churros and sangria for those wanting the full Barcelona-adjacent experience. The dining room sits close to the buzz of South Melbourne Market, with outdoor seating that makes the most of the market's foot traffic on trading days, though parking around the area can be tight given the market's popularity. Beyond the restaurant, Simply Spanish runs a separate on-site catering arm for private and corporate events, along with home delivery from the restaurant menu. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diners are catered for across the tapas and paella range, and the venue closes Monday and Tuesday, trading Wednesday to Sunday to align with the market's own opening days.
