Half Acre is housed in a restored timber mill dating to the early 1900s on Munro Street in South Melbourne's industrial south, with the building's heritage brickwork and soaring timber ceilings preserved as the centrepiece of the space. Opened in 2018 by Adam Wright-Smith alongside partners Asaf Smoli and Leigh Worcester, the team behind function venues including Carousel and Aerial, Half Acre was designed to combine the drop-in feel of a pub with the atmosphere and food of a full restaurant. The main dining space, an 85-seat room informally known as the Glass House for its light-diffusing gabled roof, sits alongside the Chimney House, an intimate 16-seat private dining room connecting the restaurant to a lively public bar and courtyard. Food is cooked over an open charcoal fire and in a wood-fired oven, with a modern Australian menu that carries a Middle Eastern influence throughout. As of this research, Half Acre's regular à la carte service is paused, with the venue currently taking bookings for private dining and exclusive buyouts rather than walk-in reservations. This shift reflects Half Acre's growing role as one of South Melbourne's more prominent event spaces, regularly hosting weddings, engagement parties, corporate functions and milestone celebrations, with capacity for up to 400 guests across its various rooms and courtyard.
