Portable Iron Houses
Three rare 1850s prefabricated iron cottages shipped from Britain during the gold rush, preserved by the National Trust and open monthly for tours.
The Portable Iron Houses at 399 Coventry Street are among the last surviving nineteenth-century prefabricated iron buildings in the world. Manufactured in Britain and shipped to Melbourne during the 1850s gold rush housing shortage, the three cottages are preserved by the National Trust of Australia and opened to the public on the first Sunday of each month.
