Albert Park Lake forms the centrepiece of Albert Park, a reserve just south of Melbourne's CBD. The lake itself covers around 120 acres and is encircled by a five-kilometre sealed path, drawing a steady stream of walkers, joggers and cyclists throughout the year, particularly at sunrise and sunset when the city skyline reflects across the water. Beyond the walking track, the park supports more than 40 sporting clubs across land and water activities. Sailing, rowing, canoeing and kayaking are all based on the lake, with boat hire available for casual visitors. Anglers and birdwatchers are also regular fixtures, with black swans, ducks and other waterbirds a constant presence around the shoreline. Nine picnic areas with free electric barbecues are spread around the lake, alongside a golf course and driving range, and the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre offers indoor pools and a gym. Albert Park Lake is best known internationally as the site of the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, held annually since 1996. For four days each March, the roads circling the lake are transformed into a 5.278-kilometre street circuit, before reverting to public parkland and recreational use for the rest of the year. Free car parking is available near the lake, and the park is accessible by tram from the city.
